Don’t blow your cover in a bar

When undercover investigators have to hang out in a bar as part of their surveillance efforts, there’s a good chance that waitresses and bartenders, who may be doing counter-surveillance for their customers, will be watching your drinking. If the team is nursing drinks, only downing one beer an hour, they’ll likely pick up on that and suspect you’re a cop, thus potentially blowing your cover. In Undercover Techniques courses trainees are taught how to surreptitiously spill drinks on the floor a bit at a time so it appears that you’re consuming at a normal rate, but without running the risk of over-imbibing. If you have to frequent bars in your line of work, be sure you have your “spilling” technique well rehearsed. Ordering beer in a bottle is best, since the brown glass will help hide the level of the liquid.
