CHICAGO Detectives on Thursday night were questioning a man who fought with an off-duty Chicago police officer who was trying to arrest him for shoplifting in the Lakeview neighborhood, causing the officer’s gun to fire, police said.

No one was hit by the gunfire, police said.

The incident began about 4 p.m. in a clothing store in the 3100 block of North Broadway, Sgt. Eugene Mullins said. The off-duty officer said he spotted the man shoplifting and followed him outside, where he tried to arrest him.

“The offender resisted and began struggling with the officer,” Mullins said. The man jumped into the back of a cab, he said. The officer drew his weapon and ordered the man out of the vehicle, but he refused.

When the officer got into the cab, the man struggled and grabbed the gun, causing it to fire, Mullins said. The man was then arrested.
