For a backup gun, I carry a .38-caliber hammerless Smith & Wesson from the Airweight Series for several reasons:
-
Most of the time a backup is used in close combat situations. A semiauto may misfire if you must conduct a contact shot, whereas a revolver won’t. You can direct all six rounds into whatever target you choose.
- I keep it in my weak side front pocket. It is easy to get to. I can have my left hand on it while talking with a contact for a quick draw, and usually they don’t even notice. I used to carry it in my weak side rear pocket, but over the years it has caused some slight back problems.
- The Glock 27 is good, but it is too heavy. I used to carry it in a ankle holster, but it fell out once during a foot pursuit.
- I carry my Airweight on me and my Glock 27 in my “go” bag with emergency items and extra mags.
