LOS ANGELES — Cell phone footage of Saturday’s fatal officer-involved shooting in Los Angeles shows a man armed with a long steel pipe advance toward police before he is shot.
Police told KABC that officers responded to calls of a man armed with a 4-to-5-foot pipe pacing outside a restaurant Saturday.
“Someone here was concerned enough that they made a 911 call ... related to that individual and his actions, which is, he was armed with this large pipe,” Detective Meghan Aguilar said.
Witness Bryce Marshall said he heard an argument occurring outside and discovered a man “wearing all white who approached the man holding the pipe,” KTLA reported.
“Basically the cops told the man to put down the pipe and he wasn’t really following the commands,” Marshall said. “He basically took a few steps forward. I don’t know if it was directly at the cop or the gentleman he had the altercation with. Then the officer fired two shots.”
Officers told the suspect to drop his weapon multiple times, but he refused. They attempted to subdue him with a TASER, but when he continued toward the officers, police fired two shots, KABC reported.
The suspect was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers or other civilians were injured.
LAPD officers are equipped with body cameras, but the devices were not turned on at the time of the incident.
