Intro: Established in 1967, Astro Optics Corp. has been providing beneficial products and solutions to the transportation industry, for over 44 years. The company specializes in the manufacturing of a wide variety of construction zone markers, delineators, reflective lenses and channelizing/traffic control devices. Where did your company name originate from?
The company was started in 1967, producing optical inserts used to make prismatic reflective lenses. It was these optics that helped form the name. In 1987, the first highway product lines of reflective markers and delineators were created. Since then, Astro Optics has been producing and distributing high quality highway delineation and traffic control products.
What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
The founders decided to venture out on their own after years of working in the corporate environment.
Why do you believe your products are essential to the Law Enforcement community?
We have some very unique products, such as our Traffic Guard Portable Speed Bump System, which can help protect and create immediate motorist awareness to workers and officers in various incident management situations.
What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced?
The biggest challenge is always gaining product awareness and usage.
What makes your company unique?
Many of the products that Astro Optics and its parent company, Tapco, offer are unique and patented. We are also privately owned and innovative and always open to new ideas in the worker safety industry.
What do your customers like best about you and your products?
Customers like how our products are easy-to-use and provide valuable safety benefits.
What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder community?
We pride ourselves in knowing we are helping those that help others.
Do you support any charitable organizations within public safety?
We support the Illinois Association of Police Chiefs as well as IACLEA.
Is there any fun fact or trivia that you’d like to share with our users about you or your company?
Both Astro Optics and Tapco have been in business for the combined total of over 100 years.
What’s next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
Yes, we are working on a very unique wireless intrusion system that will provide workers visual, audible and physical warnings. It’s made entirely in the USA and it’s extremely cost-effective.
