Shots fired during police standoff with Fla. man

HOMESTEAD, Fla.- A man barricaded himself in a home in a standoff with police Monday, causing a school to be locked down, officials said. Witnesses said shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.

The man, who was not identified, was reportedly wanted for firing shots at two Florida City police officers during a chase on Saturday, authorities said.

Officers from several police agencies reported to a residential neighborhood after the standoff began Monday morning, the Miami-Dade Police Department said.

Helicopters hovered over the scene and smoke -- believed to be created by officers to block the man’s view from the home -- briefly clouded the area. Officers wearing helmets and holding weapons were seen ducking behind police vehicles.

Ben Morgan, a park ranger who lives nearby, said he said he heard four to six shots go above his head as he hid behind a car.

“It’s always disconcerting to hear live fire come over your head,” Morgan, 56, told The Associated Press. ''You never forget the sound.’'

Homestead Middle School was locked down, and no problems were reported, the Miami-Dade County school board said. Police did not return repeated calls seeking comment.

The suspect and another man -- who was arrested Monday -- both fired shots at police in the Saturday incident, and at least one of them used an AK-47 assault rifle, police told The Miami Herald.
