SEATTLE — A deputy in Washington was taken into custody after a 13-hour standoff that ended peacefully.

KOMO News reports that 30-year-old Deputy Berdon Parsons was arrested Wednesday after he barricaded himself in an apartment.

Seattle police said the incident began as a domestic violence call early that morning. Upon arrival, authorities learned that Parsons barricaded himself in the apartment and identified himself as a deputy who worked for the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Parsons refused to come out of the apartment and at one point, sprayed pepper spray underneath the door, which caused the responding officers to retreat. A SWAT team was called after police feared the deputy had weapons.

“We want to help you. We will not go away. We want to get you the services you need,” police said.

After Parsons didn’t respond, officers used three flash-bangs to keep him awake and engaged. A SWAT team eventually took Parsons into custody in the afternoon, according to the Spokesman-Review.

Ryan Abbott, King County Sheriff’s spokesman, said Parsons was on administrative leave since March, pending an evaluation for fitness for duty. Such investigations are done if there’s “reasonable suspicion” that a member of the department is physically or psychologically unfit to perform their duties, according to the department’s manual.
