PITTSBURGH- A man briefly escaped the custody of two constables by jumping from their car as it was driving through the Squirrel Hill tunnel, police said.

The constables were taking Darnell Willis, 19, of McKeesport, to the Allegheny County Jail on Monday when he jumped from the car, police said. He opened the door and jumped after the car had slowed when the constables noticed him trying to force down a window, police said.

Constables Joseph Clement and Robert Burnett chased after Willis, who was wearing wrist and ankle cuffs, and caught him after a 50-yard chase, police said. James Murphy, of Monroeville, who was stuck in traffic, got out of his car and helped them, police said.

Willis was in custody on charges of recklessly endangering another person, receiving stolen property and other offenses.

During the struggle, Willis kicked and bit Clement, police said.
