GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - A nearly 29-hour hostage situation at a city apartment complex ended late Monday night when a second gunman surrendered to authorities.
It came a few hours after the last two hostages were released and the other suspect gave himself up.
The second gunman walked out of a city apartment with his hands up about 11:30 p.m. Monday after authorities ordered him to surrender within five minutes or get tear gassed.
He was arrested and taken to the city jail where the other suspect also was being held, police said.
The names of the suspects or hostages were not immediately released and authorities said a motive behind the standoff wasn’t known.
A 16-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl made it out of the second-story apartment safely about 8 p.m., when police said one of the gunman surrendered.
Earlier Monday, an elderly male hostage was released after he was shot in the shoulder during an exchange of gunfire between at least one of the suspects and police.
The man wasn’t seriously injured but remained at an area hospital, authorities said.
Glendale police officers, SWAT teams and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers had surrounded the apartment complex since about 7 p.m. Sunday when negotiations began with two men armed with at least one rifle and numerous handguns and holding three people hostage.
About 30 people were evacuated from the apartment complex Monday morning when one of the suspects shot at police officers.
