JAMISON, Penn. (AP) -- A man surrendered to police after a seven-hour standoff that saw a heavy exchange of gunfire, some of which injured the man, police said.
Thomas John Malone, 52, of Warwick Township, Bucks County, was shot in the chest and pelvic area but walked out on his own just before 9 a.m. Friday, authorities said. No one else was injured.
Police later evacuated about 20 homes and businesses amid concerns that the house was being used as a methamphetamine laboratory.
Malone allegedly fired shots into the ceiling during a dispute with a woman at about 2 a.m., prompting her to flee the house and summon help.
A SWAT team responded. Malone allegedly fired two dozen shots at police at about 5:30 a.m., leading police to return fire.
“When the officers were fired upon, they returned nine rounds into the building,” Warwick Township Police Chief Joseph Costello said.
Police also used tear gas to try to flush the man out.
Malone was in fair condition at Abington Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon following surgery, a nursing supervisor said.
He was charged with attempted homicide for the shots fired at police, as well as aggravated assault, a weapons violation, making terroristic threats and other charges.
Malone had not been arraigned and it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer, officials said.
