JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A grenade attack on a Protestant church in Pakistan injured a Florida native and killed his wife and stepdaughter, officials said.
Barbara Green and her 17-year-old daughter Kristen Wormsley, a senior at the American School in Islamabad, were the only Americans who died in the attack. Three others were killed and 45 were injured.
Green and her husband, Milton Green, a native of Fernandina Beach, worked at the U.S. Embassy - she in administration and he in the computer division.
Milton Green, 46, and the couple’s 10-year-old son were injured but not seriously, according to police.
Family members said Barbara Green and her children returned to Pakistan last month and felt safe there.
“They never felt really threatened at all,” Green’s son, Milton Green Jr. of Minneapolis told The Florida Times-Union. He said Barbara and the two children returned to the United States after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
When not overseas, the family lived near Washington, D.C., he said.
Milton Green lived in Fernandina Beach, about 25 miles northeast of Jacksonville on Florida’s east coast, until he entered the Air Force after high school.
Secretary of State Colin Powell called Green’s family in Fernandina Beach on Sunday.
Powell called the Greens “a tremendous asset to the country” and expressed his sadness over the deaths, said Ulysses Green Jr., the older brother of Milton Green.
Ulysses said his brother talked of returning to Florida soon, and Kristen had hoped to enroll at Florida State University in the fall.
