LABELLE, Fla. — A driver rammed an SUV through the garage of a Lee County deputy’s home before he opened fire with a handgun, FOX 4 reported.
The incident occurred April 14 when the deputy was off-duty and at home, according to the report. The deputy responded by grabbing his firearm to defend his family, an action that Sheriff Carmine Marceno hailed as heroic.
“He’s a hero. He saved his and his family’s lives while sitting at home on a Sunday. I’m very proud that he’s able to work and stand with us during this event, and thank God nobody was hurt,” Marceno said.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Derek Evan Weber, was arrested with the assistance of the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, according to the report. Marceno believes the attack was targeted, noting that the deputy’s patrol car was parked at the home, although the motive remains unclear. Weber now faces multiple charges, including attempted premeditated murder.
“Who would think that you’re sitting inside your house on a Sunday, and for no reason, someone drives a vehicle right through your house, and immediately you’re getting hit by gunfire,” Marceno recounted during a news conference.
Following the incident, the damaged property was secured by deputies, and the involved deputy was placed on administrative leave, according to the report. He will also receive wellness care to ensure his mental health is addressed.
“That’s a very traumatic incident, and we have to make sure that they’re mentally okay, and if they come back, they come back in the right mindset,” Marceno emphasized. No additional details were provided about the deputy or the ongoing investigation into the attack.
