NEW YORK — Sources told CBS News that a potential terror threat is scheduled for the day before the presidential election.

U.S. intelligence alerted joint terrorism task forces that al-Qaida could be planning terror attacks on Monday in three states. New York, Texas and Virginia are all possible targets. No specific locations have been mentioned.

Sources said while the threats are being taken seriously, the intelligence is being assessed and the credibility has not yet been confirmed.

“The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States,” a senior FBI official told the publication. “The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety.”
