SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. - Police used a Taser stun gun to subdue a Spring Valley man this morning after he allegedly became unruly and tried to resist arrest after a traffic stop.
Nathaniel Coppage, 25, of 330 Kennedy Drive, had stopped his car on Route 45 near the Spring Valley police station and was blocking traffic, police said. Police pulled him over about 10:30 a.m. and discovered he was driving with a suspended license. Officer John Beltempo said he told the man the car would be towed.
At that point, Beltempo said, Coppage became unruly and kicked the door open and almost struck him with the door. He also started yelling and cursing and refused to put his hands on the vehicle’s hood, Beltempo said.
Beltempo said he used the Taser to subdue Coppage after he failed to comply with orders and tried to leave the scene. Police also found three small bags of marijuana in the car.
Coppage was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, disorderly conduct, unlawful possession of marijuana, obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Spring Valley police station pending arraignment.
