DETROIT, Mich. — A Detroit police officer has succumbed to injuries he suffered three years ago while responding to a call.

Officer Waldis Johnson was shot by a suspect while responding to a domestic violence call in Detroit on April 30, 2017.

A tenant in the apartment building Johnson responded to opened fire, striking Johnson in the head.

After Johnson was shot, his partner returned fire, killing the suspect, and then dragged Johnson to safety.

The Detroit Police Department announced the news of Johnson’s death in a Facebook post on Monday, June 1.

“He sadly succumbed to his injuries on May 31, 2020. We are truly saddened by the loss of our brother in blue. He will be forever missed and never forgotten,” the post read.
