Veteran Texas police chief dies on duty

EDGEWOOD, Texas — The Edgewood Police Department is mourning the loss of their chief.

Chief David Hammonds died Monday while at the station, Edgewood City Administrator Petra Marley told KLTV. No other details were provided. 

Hammonds began his career in law enforcement in 1969 as a Texas trooper, according to a release from Edgewood Police Department Lieutenant Robert Dearing. 

In 2015, Hammonds became the Edgewood Police Department's chief where he worked to secure necessary funding for equipment upgrades, aiming to elevate the department's standards to meet the needs of Edgewood's residents.

"To those of us who knew and loved him, he will forever be “Chief.. After 54 years and two months of duty to the citizens of the State of Texas, Chief David J. Hammonds passed away while doing the job he loved. E.O.W. 9/18/2023," Dearing wrote in a statement.
