Just finished reading Dave Grossi’s excellent article on the “low risk” traffic stop [Read the article]. I would like to add one thing to this tactically sound treatise: “Don’t be where they saw you last.”
After you have written the traffic citation and the violator has left your location, GET OUT OF THERE! Find a different location that is relatively safe and complete your notes there.
If the violator decides to go home and get his gun, or to go around the block and come up on you while you are busy with your head and eyes down writing your notes, you will be at an extreme disadvantage.
If the violator has evil intentions after the stop, make him work to get you. Don’t be where he saw you last. The first time I heard that I didn’t quite know what it meant, but remember this: they have to see you before they can shoot you. Don’t make it easy for them.
