When searching a subject, be sure to search inside the shoes or boots. I had a fellow officer search and cuff a wanted subject I had stopped. I watched the search, was satisfied with its thoroughness and placed the subject in my patrol unit for transport. While en route, the subject asked what I would say if he told me that he had the means to kill himself in the back of my squad. I turned around and saw that he had gotten his hands in front of him and pulled a 22 Magnum Derringer from the lace up work boots he was wearing. He was safely disarmed and taken to jail, but I learned a very valuable lesson that night as did other deputies.
