Md. officer wounded after “friendly fire”

BALTIMORE - A police officer shot following a traffic stop Wednesday suffered non-life threatening injuries thanks to his protective vest, a department spokesman said.

“He’ll be fine. The vest possibly saved his life,” police spokesman Det. Donny Moses said.

The shooting occurred after the officer attempted to pull over a vehicle occupied by a suspected armed person about 8:30 a.m., Moses said.

“The driver started to pull off again at which point several cars were struck, a brief struggle ensued and at some point the officer was shot,” the police spokesman said. The officer was believed hit by “friendly fire,” Moses said.

The unidentified officer was struck on the left side and taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Further details were not immediately available, Moses said.

Several suspects were also hospitalized. The conditions of the suspects and whether all were captured was not immediately known, the police spokesman said.
