VANCOUVER, BC — A man’s attempt to flee police after assaulting an officer was cut short when he ran across a street and was struck by a pickup truck.

The incident began when two plainclothes officers stopped a vehicle that was traveling through an area closed off to private cars. One passenger pulled an officer into the car for two others to punch repeatedly in the face, according to the Vancouver Sun. All three men then exited the vehicle and continued the assault on the officer and his partner, who ran to assist.

The officers had just called for backup when one of the men began to flee. He was suddenly struck by a pickup truck as he ran through an intersection.

The man was arrested two blocks over.

“This is an example of the risk all police officer face as they work to protect the citizens they serve. This sort of incident affects the entire policing community,” Vancouver Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Robillard said in a statement. “We wish our officer a speedy recovery and will ensure the officer and his family have the support they need.”

The three men are charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. The officer was treated at a local hospital for “substantial injuries,” according to police.
