While simultaneously speaking with a 911 call taker, a recently-widowed Oklahoma woman shot and killed an intruder who was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The multitasking mother of a three-month-old baby boy “got her 12 gauge, went into her bedroom and got a pistol, put the bottle in the baby’s mouth, and called 911,” said a report from KOCO-TV, an ABC News affiliate in Oklahoma City.
Sarah McKinley says she had observed 24-year-old Justin Martin — who on the very day of her husband’s funeral last month “dropped by to say hello” — and another man moving about the outside of her home, trying each door in succession to gain entry.
As calmly as you please, the 18-year-old woman said to the 911 call taker, “I’m here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?”
The call taker then asked, “Are your doors locked?”
“Yes,” McKinley said. “I’ve got two guns in my hand. Is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?”
The dispatcher replied, “I can’t tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby.”
Then, at the very second when the knife-wielding man kicked in the door to her house, that’s precisely what McKinley did.
The second intruder, quite wisely it seems, turned himself in.
