CUMMING, Ga. — Officials in Georgia released disturbing bodycam footage Tuesday of a newborn girl who was discovered inside a tied-up plastic bag in the woods, hoping it will lead to information on her identity.

In the video, which was released by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy can be heard talking to an unidentified man who said he found the little girl abandoned in a wooded area in Cumming around 10 p.m. on June 6.

“We heard [the crying] from our house,” the man told the deputy. The deputy then carefully rips open the bag and the naked crying baby is seen.

The child, who officials named Baby India, was still covered in fluids with her umbilical cord attached.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” a deputy can be heard saying. “Look how precious you are. Yeah, she’s a sweetheart.”

Baby India is then swaddled in a deputy’s shirt before she’s given first aid by paramedics. She was taken to a local hospital and is now “thriving” in the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services.

“We release this footage in hopes to receive credible information on the identity of Baby India and to show how important it is to find closure in this case,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The agency also noted that under the state law Safe Haven, a mother can leave her baby, at up to 30 days old, with an employee of any medical facility including a hospital, institutional infirmary, health center or birthing center in Georgia without prosecution.

Forsyth Sheriff Ron Freeman said at a June 7 press conference he would not discuss potential criminal charges until detectives could determine what happened.
