The layer approach to winter gloves

As an instructor with over 15 years of cold weather training experience, I encourage my officers to embrace the concept of layering when wearing winter gloves. I suggest three layers: First, a thin polypropylene liner glove; second, a form-fitting leather glove with 3B barrier protection and/or Kevlar liner; the third layer (the outside layer) is a expedition weight finger or mitten glove. (Mitten gloves keep your fingers toasty, and are therefore recommended.)

The layers can be taken on or off, depending on the tactical nature of the situation, and in fact, the third, other layer should only be worn in non-tactical situations (e.g., vehicle accidents). As with any piece of equipment gloves should be incorporated into your training.
