Man Escapes from L.A. Cell by Digging Hole in Wall

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES- A robbery suspect escaped from a holding cell Thursday by boring a hole through the wall and slithering out, then slipping through an emergency exit, authorities said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was booked at the LAPD’s 77th Street station on suspicion of robbery for robbing and threatening a homeless man with a metal pipe, said Lt. Carlos Islas.

The man apparently bored the 9- by 15-inch hole in the drywall and escaped around 3 a.m., Islas said.

''Clearly, there’s a hole in the wall,’' he said. ''Whether it’s a construction flaw will be determined at a later date.’'

Canine and metro units were deployed around the station to search for the suspect, who was described as 5-foot-6, 160-pound Hispanic man with a shaved head and an abrasion on his right cheek. He may go by the nickname ''Junior,’' Islas said.
