Mayor Comments on Suspension of Park Police Chief

Williams Understands Reasons For Suspension

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- D.C. Mayor Tony Williams is weighing in on the decision by the National Park Service to suspend U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers.

The chief was suspended earlier this month for telling reporters that she had been forced to cut back on patrols across the area because her officers were required to guard national monuments.

Williams told WTOP Radio that Chambers should have made her comments at formal hearings on Capitol Hill, rather than to the media. He said officials are already well aware of the deficiencies she pointed out.

While not saying whether he supported the decision to suspend Chambers, the mayor said he would consider taking similar action against Police Chief Charles Ramsey if he spoke “out of course.”

Chambers has been charged with insubordination, unauthorized lobbying and public disclosure of budget information.
