Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) - A Boston police officer shot and fatally wounded a man when the driver refused to stop his car, police said.

Police spokeswoman Mariellen Burns said the shooting occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday in the city’s Roxbury section in the vicinity of Elm Hill Avenue and Crawford Street.

According to Paul Farrahar, police deputy superintendent, an officer spotted a car driving the wrong way with its lights off down Crawford Street, a one-way street.

He said the officer attempted to stop the car, and shot when the driver refused to stop and tried to run him over.

The victim, identified as William Murray Jr. of Boston’s South End, was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not identified the officer, who was treated for shock and has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.
