ACTON, Mass. — A trooper at the state police barracks in Concord helped a Westford couple deliver a baby along the side of Route 2 in Acton on Wednesday after the couple was unable to make it to Emerson Hospital before their daughter emerged into the world.

Police said the couple, who are not being identified, were on their way to the hospital when they realized they were not going to get there in time and called 911 at 9:11 p.m., after the expectant father pulled his vehicle into the breakdown lane of Route 2.

Trooper John Ciszek took the 911 call, and gave the father instructions on how to help his wife deliver the child even as an ambulance and state troopers sped to the scene.

The expectant father, following Ciszek’s instructions, helped his wife deliver a healthy baby girl before emergency crews could arrive at 9:16.

The mother and baby were then taken to Emerson Hospital, where they are in good condition.
