ATLANTA – A pregnant carjacker allegedly made off with a news van occupied by another pregnant woman.
The fast and furious maternity mayhem ensued in Atlanta around 5:30 a.m. when CBS46’s Iyani Hughes was in the back of the vehicle on her computer after wrapping up an early morning report, according to CBS News.
That’s when alleged auto thief Seniqua Lunsford allegedly jumped into the front seat of the vehicle and sped off with Hughes still in the van. Hughes hit the floor and screamed as Lunsford hit the gas.
News anchor Karyn Greer heard audio of the pandemonium playing out from her perch inside the CBS newsroom.
“I heard a blood-curdling scream, I heard a car speed off and was asking ‘What happened? What happened?” Greer said.
Greer reported that police in the area investigating a car crash, also thought to have been caused by Lunsford, turned their attention to the combination carjacking and kidnapping and followed the news van.
Lunsford reportedly drove the van for five miles before crashing it into a tree. Hughes had managed to get into the vehicle’s passenger seat and buckle her seatbelt, according to the report.
Both pregnant women were hospitalized after the crash. Hughes was released from the hospital after texting Greer that she was shaken, but OK. The alleged carjacker was taken into police custody.
Hughes had been working with a cameraman who experienced the abduction, but was getting into his own car to practice social distancing.
