SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Salt Lake County sheriff’s deputy required hospital care after a Draper man allegedly assaulted him when investigators stopped the car he was riding in and found a sword inside.

The car was being driven by a man who was wanted on suspicion of weapons violations and shoplifting, investigators wrote in charges filed Monday.

After deputies found the 10- to 12-inch sword in the car, the passenger became defiant and fought with one of the officers. The deputy suffered injuries to his arms, knee and wrist, investigators wrote.

The man, 25, was charged with assault against a peace officer and interference with an arresting officer, both misdemeanors.
