Second officer attacked inside Ga. store

The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. — Athens-Clarke County police say a woman grabbed an officer’s handgun during a scuffle at the same grocery store where another officer was stabbed last month.

Police Lieutenant Mike Tyndell says Officer Charles Snyder’s injuries in the attack about 7 p.m. Monday at the Kroger store are not believed to be serious. He says the off-duty officer was working in uniform as a store security guard and approached a woman identified as Shakeena Davis of Athens after someone told him the woman was wanted on felony warrants.

Tyndell says Davis tried to run away and then struggled with Snyder, grabbing the officer’s handgun from its holster. He says Snyder was able to get control of the woman after spraying her with pepper spray. Tyndell also says Snyder was able to prevent the gun from being fired as they struggled.

Snyder was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for examination. Davis was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center, also for evaluation of possible minor injuries.

Police charged Davis with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction and attempting to take possession of a law enforcement officer’s weapon.

The confrontation was in the same store where a man stabbed Sergeant Courtney Gale with a kitchen knife December 12th while she was working as a security guard. Gale remains hospitalized.
