KATY, Texas — A kind gesture from a Great American Cookie employee resulted in threats against him and a suspension from work.
Zack Randolph told Click 2 Houston that he was taught to respect law enforcement, so he bought an officer a cookie with his own money and without his employee discount Sunday. He said the gesture angered the customers in line behind the officer.
“They were asking if I was going to buy them a cookie. And I told them both, ‘No. They don’t have a badge. I’m sorry,’” Randolph said.
Randolph said the customers threatened to beat him up or get him fired. His manager later suspended him for a week.
“I learned to respect police. And because of that I always got ... I always had people supporting me, which is what how it should be. But this situation was a bit different,” he said.
After further review, the company reversed the suspension and apologized, stating Randolph did nothing wrong.
“Our stores are independently managed and operated. However, when the situation was brought to our attention, Great American Cookies Corporate went directly to our franchisee to ensure that the situation was addressed and handled appropriately,” David Kaiser, executive vice president of Great American Cookies, told the news station.
Randolph said since his story has spread, he’s received multiple job offers and isn’t sure what he’s going to do next. But his mother, Tami Randolph, said she’s proud her son did the right thing.
“You should be rewarded for what you did,” Tami said. “You kinda are teaching your kids to be respectful when you’re adults. And when adults are not respectful back to you, it’s just hard. You’ve gotta do what’s kinda’ painful.”
