CORNOA, Calif. — A 30-year-old Corona man was shot to death Sunday during a confrontation with police, according to police and coroner’s investigators.

David Salas died at 8:34 p.m. Sunday at Corona Regional Medical Center, less than an hour after the 7:55 p.m. shooting in a shopping center parking lot along the 600 block of South Lincoln Avenue, coroner’s investigators said in a written statement.

Officers were called to the parking lot at 7:49 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a man acting erratically, the Corona Police Department said in a separate statement.

“Upon the officer’s arrival, the officer contacted the suspect, at which time a confrontation took place,” according to the police statement. “The suspect produced a weapon ... resulting in the suspect being shot.”

The officer wasn’t hurt.

Corona Police Sgt. Frank Barron said Monday that because of the ongoing investigation, the department would not immediately describe the erratic behavior, the type of weapon Salas had, how he threatened the officer, the number of officers at the scene and how many shots were fired. Police also would not release the name of the officer who shot Salas.
