MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — A New Jersey Sgt. is dead after a 10-hour standoff in his New Jersey home Sunday night.

Veteran Sgt. David Powell barricaded himself inside his home Sunday afternoon and called police, letting them know he was armed.

Neighbors were evacuated as the Middlesex County SWAT team surrounded the home. Shots were heard around 7 p.m.

Some close to the officer say the incident did not come entirely as a surprise.

Sgt. Powel had recently gone through his second divorce and was living with his sister, according to MyCentralJersey.com.

The wife of an officer who worked with Powell described his personality as “mercurial” and said that other issues in the past led “us all” to believe that this was on the horizon.

Another neighbor, according to MyCentralJersey.com, said that Powell seemed to be “a nice man” who would greet her when they were outside.
