WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — The mayor of a small New Jersey town says he’s had a Sept. 11 memorial marker removed after it sparked anger.
The granite marker outside the Washington Township Memorial Building in Warren County dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack and set next to a piece of World Trade Center steel listed the names of the mayor, township committee members and town administrator. But it did not refer to what happened on Sept. 11, 2001.
Mayor Samir Elbassiouny (el-bis-OWN'-ee) says he’s sorry it was seen as a monument to the officials.
The town wanted to honor the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks. He said the marker was ordered in a rush to be ready for the 10th anniversary ceremony last Sunday.
He says a second marker was not completed in time.
