GALENA, Ill.- Autopsy results show a murder suspect who was the target of a manhunt by law enforcement officers in three states hanged himself.
Douglas Maring was wanted in the slaying of his eight-year-old adopted son, Anthony.
He eluded police until his body was found early Saturday in a farm building outside Galena by Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s deputies and Illinois State Police.
Officials say preliminary results from the autopsy performed by the Winnebago County coroner’s office concluded that the 30-year-old Maring died from asphyxia due to hanging.
The boy was found early Wednesday morning in a pickup truck that Maring had crashed while being pursued by police.
Maring escaped on foot and apparently stole a nearby car. Authorities said the boy had suffered a knife wound that he received before the crash.
