Phoenix police looking for man who hit officer with car

PHOENIX — Phoenix police are looking for a man who they say hit an officer with his car and fled on foot.

Sgt. Joel Tranter said Monday that 31-year-old Joseph Schrody is now wanted on a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Tranter says police went to Schrody’s north Phoenix home Saturday afternoon to arrest him on a forgery charge. But Tranter says Schrody ignored officer commands to surrender and began backing away in his car.

Tranter says Schrody then hit the gas, and the right front quarter panel of his car hit Officer Charles Hilyard, who was not injured.

Hilyard then shot out the car’s front right tire.

Tranter says Schrody fled in his car, but lost control of it and ran into a nearby apartment complex. Officers lost sight of Schrody and searched his girlfriend’s apartment, but did not find him.
