BEAUFORT, S.C.- A woman accused of breaking into her ex-husband’s house was charged with assault after authorities say she knocked down two sheriff’s deputies responding to reports of a burglary.

Rebecca Ruth Weiss, 31, was arrested after a short car chase on Tuesday and was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, burglary and grand larceny.

The two deputies were at the ex-husband’s home on Lady’s Island, 15 miles north of Hilton Head Island, when Weiss pulled up and started yelling at them, sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Szpanka said.

One of the officers went to the open driver’s side door to talk to her, while the other went to the passenger’s side. Weiss put her car in reverse and accelerated, knocking both deputies over, Szpanka said.

Sheriff’s Cpl. John Eckard had bruises and numbness, and Patrolman First Class Curtis Evans hurt his back, Sheriff P.J. Tanner said.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Weiss dumping her ex-husband’s clothes, laptop computer and a guitar out of her car window while driving over a bridge. She dumped other items in a trash bin behind a drug store, deputies said.
