NEW YORK (AP) -- A senior inspector for the U.S. marshal’s office was found shot to death in Manhattan early Monday, shortly before he was to meet with another deputy marshal, a U.S. marshal said.
Police were notified of the shooting at 6:43 a.m. at the corner of West 138th Street and 12th Avenue, where officials found the body of a man who had been shot in the head, police Detective Noel Waters said.
Police did not immediately confirm that the shooting involved a U.S. deputy marshal.
But U.S. Marshal Joseph R. Guccione confirmed that a senior inspector from the marshal’s office was found shot to death.
“We’re in the process of notifying his family,” Guccione said, declining to immediately identify the man.
Guccione said the inspector was on duty and was in the Riverside neighborhood of Manhattan on his way to meet another deputy U.S. marshal when he was found shot to death.
“We think it was job related,” he said of the shooting. Further details were not immediately available.
