COCOA, Fla. — Authorities say a man got out of a truck at a central Florida gas station and shot a state Highway Patrol trooper, who returned fire, killing the man.
Cpl. David Jacobs of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office tells Florida Today the trooper approached the vehicle Sunday night near Cocoa to inform the driver of an equipment violation.
Jacobs says a male passenger stepped out of the truck and began firing at the trooper, striking him.
The trooper returned fire, killing the man.
Jacobs said the trooper’s wounds were not life-threatening. He said it wasn’t immediately clear how many shots either person fired.
Authorities said a woman in the truck was taken into custody for questioning.
Cocoa is about 45 miles southeast of Orlando.
