Veteran Pa. Officer Arrested on Cocaine Charges

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A vice-squad detective was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing and smoking crack cocaine that was evidence in drug investigations.

John D. Evans, 43, of Elizabethtown, was charged with 22 counts each of drug possession, theft and evidence tampering. After a preliminary arraignment by a Harrisburg district justice, Evans was released on his own recognizance.

The 12-year veteran also was fired by the Harrisburg Police Department.

His lawyer, Jerry J. Russo, said Evans does not deny the allegations and is “deeply regretful for the embarrassment he has cause not only his family, but his police department.”

“Most of the information they have is information we provided to them,” Russo said.

The investigation began about three weeks ago when Evans told Chief Charles G. Kellar he was under stress and wanted to quit before he did something for which he could be arrested, the mayor’s office said.
