CHICAGO — Two men were charged with attempted murder Monday after one was accused of firing at an off-duty police officer over the weekend.
The shooting took place about 10:45 a.m. as the undisclosed officer was on the way to church Sunday when he interrupted a burglary of a sport-utility vehicle by the two suspects, Javier Fernandez, 32, and John Gonzalez, 30, authorities said.
Prosecutors alleged the officer heard glass breaking, went to investigate and saw Gonzalez breaking into an SUV in the church parking lot in the 1900 block of South Union Avenue.
The officer displayed his badge and twice told Gonzales he was a police officer, prosecutors alleged, but Gonzalez jumped into a red Nissan truck driven by Fernandez and fled. As they drove off, Gonzales fired several shots at the officer, but he was not injured, prosecutors said.
The officer returned fire, hitting Fernandez in the arm and hand, prosecutors said.
The men allegedly fled to the North Side and were apprehended. They were being held without bail, prosecutors said.
