MANCHESTER, N.H. — A man convicted of attempting to kill an officer was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison during a trial Monday.
Myles Webster, 23, was found guilty of trying to kill Officer Dan Doherty during an incident in March that Judge Jillian Abrahamson described as an “attempt to assassinate,” according to WMUR.com.
Webster’s lawyer requested 20 years to life for the incident in which Webster opened fire more than a dozen times, hitting Doherty with several bullets.
Abrahamson noted that the sentence was longer than some murder sentences because she hoped it would deter others from living the “thug life” Webster had described living.
“Myles Webster, the day of the 21st, yes, he shot me, but he shot my uniform and what it stood for,” Doherty said. “I just happened to be the unfortunate soul inside that uniform.”
Witnesses believed that Doherty would have died from the shooting, had he not been in such good health and so close to a hospital, according to the article.
