SHREVEPORT, La. — The Louisiana rookie officer fatally shot on Jan. 9 as she was heading to work the night shift was killed by her boyfriend, according to police.

Treveon Anderson, 26, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with second-degree murder of Shreveport Officer Chateri Payne, Fox News reports.

Glenn Frierson, 38, and Lawrence Pierre, 22, were also taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. It’s believed that Anderson pulled the trigger.

“We are still mourning the heinous murder of Officer Payne,” police Chief Ben Raymond told reporters. “We can have some peace in taking three evil cowards off of our streets so they cannot harm anyone else.”

Payne, who graduated from the police academy Nov. 16, was in her uniform on her way to work when she was attacked outside of her home. She died within hours of being shot multiple times.

Anderson, who is the father of the couple’s daughter, told police he was inside the home at the time of the shooting and ran outside when he heard gunshots. He claims he shot at a person wearing all white clothing, who he believes is the suspect, before Payne had been shot.

“We believe that Anderson shot and killed her and concocted the false narrative of her being murdered by an unknown suspect,” Raymond said.

Pierre and Frierson are believed to have been accomplices to Anderson, but detectives say they don’t have information indicating other men were present during the time of the shooting.

On Payne and Anderson’s Facebook accounts, people mention the couple were engaged to be married.
