BERNARDS, N.J. — A police officer was killed in a three-car wreck on his way to work.
Police told NBC New York that Matthew Tarentino, 29, was driving to work Tuesday when a car crossed over a median and hit two vehicles head-on. Two other people involved in the crash were also transported to a hospital. One man later died.
Tarentino worked with DARE and chaperoned multiple middle school class trips. He also taught kids about bike and pool safety and the dangers of interacting with strangers, the news station reported.
“Officer Tarentino was an important part of the Summit community and a well-known face amongst the students and staff in Summit Public Schools,” Superintendent June Chang said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the Tarentino family at this time. This is a tragic loss of a great friend of our Summit Schools community,”
An investigation is ongoing.
