PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A North Providence police chief was suspended after being arrested for stealing more than $700 from a Providence stripper’s purse last month.

Col. John Whiting, 57, was arrested Thursday, WPRI reported. Police say Whiting stole $714 from the purse of Justina Cardoso, 21, who left it in a vehicle that crashed after a police chase in August.

Whiting tried to convince a Pawtucket patrolman to cover up the crime, sources say, but the officer reported it to his supervisor.

North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi said Whiting has been suspended without pay, and Cardoso and Whiting are scheduled to appear in separate state courts on Friday.
