Scope it out

As police and corrections officers, we transport prisoners every day inside and outside our secured facilities. One thing that can help us on the outside is “scoping out” our various destinations before we’re called there. How many times have we been notified that we are taking an inmate to a location that we have never been before? If we have time, whether it is a day or two before a transport, or even a couple of hours, go by the destination and have a look around. Staffs at most doctors’ offices, for example, will be glad to let you look around when they know the reason is for their safety as well as the safety of the other patients. This is also true for transports to hospitals. Make it a habit to take a “dry run” to your various regular transport destinations. You never know when something has changed at a location, whether it’s construction, new policies and so on. Always be aware that “routine” never is.
