BOWIE COUNTY, Texas — Multiple officers were injured while responding to a house fire over the weekend.

Deputies Eric McMillian and Westin Fannin responded to a house fire call with the DeKalb Volunteer Fire Department Sunday, KSLA reported.

When they arrived on the scene, homeowner Bryan Lee Batchelor came out of his residence and pointed a gun at deputies. Police said he was attempting to stop officials from putting out the house fire.

Batchelor got into his truck and fled into a pasture. During the pursuit, the deputies’ patrol unit got stuck. Batchelor allegedly rammed his truck into the unit and a shootout ensued. Fannin and McMillian were injured, but are expected to recover.

Deputy Clint Freeman spotted Batchelor fleeing the scene. Freeman attempted to move his patrol unit out of Batchelor’s path, but his vehicle was struck by Batchelor’s truck. Officials said Batchelor “had intentions” of hitting Freeman’s patrol car. Freeman’s vehicle was totaled.

Batchelor fled again until Lt. Chris Allison and Deputy Martin McGee saw him driving on a county road. Batchelor crashed his truck into another patrol unit and another shootout ensued. All of the injured deputies are expected to survive and have been treated and released.

Following the shooting, Batchelor was taken into custody. He was transported to the hospital where he is under police custody. He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant and evading arrest with a vehicle.
