LULING, La. — An officer who was shot multiple times while directing traffic has been released from the hospital.

According to the Times-Picayune, Deputy Burt Hazeltine was escorted by police from the hospital to his home Tuesday.

Hazeltine was shot in the face, arm and chest by 58-year-old suspect John Paul Devillier on Thursday while directing traffic in a school zone.

Police believe the suspect, who was arrested and faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, was angered over having to wait in traffic. He left the scene after exchanging words with the officer, returned shortly after, and opened fire on the officer with a handgun, the Associated Press reported.

“He [Hazeltine] still has a rough road ahead of him,” sheriff’s office spokesman Pat Yoes told the Times-Picayune.
