KANSAS CITY, Kan. — When Curtis Ayers is released from the hospital, police plan to bind him with the handcuffs of the man he allegedly killed.
Curtis Ayers has been hospitalized since May 9 after he was shot by a Kansas City police officer several hours after Detective Brad Lancaster was fatally shot near Kansas Speedway.
Police have not said when Ayers will be released from the hospital.
But in a tweet, Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Terry Zeigler described the plan to use Lancaster’s handcuffs when he is.
“Words cannot express what this means to our department,” Zeigler wrote in his tweet.
Ayers, 28, of Tonganoxie, Kan., is charged in Wyandotte County District Court with capital murder in the death of Lancaster.
He also is charged in connection with a series of carjackings allegedly committed after the officer was shot.
Ayers was driving a car reportedly stolen in Basehor when he crashed at Bannister Road and Bruce R. Watkins Drive while attempting to flee from Kansas City police.
He allegedly shot a woman while trying to carjack her vehicle in that area before a Kansas City officer shot him.
He is charged in Jackson County with several crimes stemming from that incident.
