INDIANAPOLIS — A judge has entered a preliminary not-guilty plea for the man charged in the killing of an Indianapolis police officer during a shootout.
Twenty-five-year-old Major Davis Jr. wore a red jail uniform as sheriff’s deputies pushed him in a wheelchair to a Marion County courtroom Tuesday morning for his first court appearance on murder charges.
Davis is charged with fatally shooting Officer Perry Renn during a July 5 shootout. Authorities say Davis was wounded and was hospitalized for about a week but haven’t detailed his injuries.
Police say Renn and other officers were responding to a call of shots being fired on the city’s north side when he exchanged gunfire with Davis, who hit Renn with three rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle.
